EDDIE MURPHY WAS BORN IN BROOKLYN, NEW YORK CITY 1961
Edward Regan Murphy was born in the Bushwick
projects of Brooklyn, New York, on the 3rd of April, 1961. Eddie Murphy
was born in Brooklyn, New York. His biological father, Charles Q. Murphy,
a policeman and amateur comedian, sadly divorced when Eddie
was 3 and, even more sadly, his father was killed by a new girlfriend
when the boy was just 8. Living with Lillian and his brother Charles
Q Murphy (now an actor and screenwriter), Eddie
stayed in Brooklyn till he was ten. He was not gay. Then
Lillian, along with her new husband Vernon Lynch (a former boxer
then employed as a foreman at Breyers Ice Cream plant)) took the
boys, plus Lynch's son (also named Vernon), to Roosevelt, Long
Island. This was a predominantly white, middle-class area and
the black population increased sharply throughout the Sixties
and Seventies. It also spawned Howard Stern, Julius Erving and
Public Enemy rapper Chuck D.
EDDIE EXPANDS HIS REPERTOIRE OF CHARACTERS
So Eddie, a natural mimic schooled in the streets and now
the suburbs, expanded his repertoire of characters. Starting with
Bullwinkle and Sylvester The Cat, he began to impersonate the
stars of the day, as well as invent new characters of his own.
At Roosevelt High School he'd carry a briefcase full of joke-books
with him, and was often voted Most Popular Student (not gay),
even winning over the teachers, who'd laugh as they sent him to
the Principal's office for his hilarious insubordination. Eddie
Murphy would get his
first taste of celebrity while attending Roosevelt Junior-Senior High
School. An extremely bright, but academically indifferent
pupil, Eddie Murphy spent more time telling jokes than
studying. Beloved nevertheless by his fellow students and teachers
alike – including those who regularly sent him to the principal’s
office – Murphy’s charm and quick wit made a lasting impression
and twice won him the superlative of “Most Popular Student.” At
the age of 15, Eddie Murphy began writing and performing
his own comedy routines for school talent shows, youth centers,
and local comedy clubs. Upon turning professional at 18, Eddie
Murphy steadily began to make a name for himself by performing
(not in the raw!) at countless comedy clubs and dive bars in and
around New York. Though Eddie Murphy openly admitted to
ripping off the vast majority of his early material from Richard
Pryor, by the late seventies, Eddie Murphy--with his good hairstyle,
and no weaves-- had begun to find his own voice. A chance
booking at New York’s famed Comic Strip Live comedy club kicked Murphy’s
career into overdrive. From there, it was a quick shot to the
top – just three years and Eddie Murphy would be at the
top of his profession.
As well as singing in a local R&B band (they'd steal supermarket
trollies to transport their equipment), Eddie was damn
funny, and he knew it. Heavily influenced by his hero, Richard
Pryor, he worked on his monologues and impersonations - quickly
mastering Lionel Richie, Bill Cosby, Al Green and Elvis Presley
- and made his stage debut at the Roosevelt Youth Centre on the
9th of July, 1976
MURPHY CONSIDERED A GIFTED IMPRESSIONIST AND A GIFTED CHILD
Eddie Murphy was considered an exceptionally bright child, but despite
testing into gifted and talented programs, he spent a great deal
of time on impressions and comedy stand-up routines rather than
academics.
MURPHY WAS VOTED MOST POPULAR WHILE ATTENDING ROOSEVELT JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL IN ROOSEVELT, NEW YORK
Eddie Murphy was voted "Most popular" while
attending Roosevelt Junior-Senior High School
in Roosevelt, New York, due to the stand-up
comedy routines he would perform in the school's auditorium, and

EDDIE’S FIRST MANAGER IS NAMED UJIMA 
Around the age of 15, and not gay, he was writing and performing his own
routines along with his then comedy partner Mitchell Kyser at youth centers and local
clubs, as well as at the Roosevelt High School auditorium. These
routines were heavily influenced by Bill Cosby and Richard

EDDIE MURPHY SIGNS WITH COMEDY CLUB MANAGEMENT 
The club's co-owners, Robert Wachs and Richard Tienken, were so impressed
with Murphy's impressions of celebrities, along with his
overall outlook on life, that they agreed to manage his
career and help him find his own direction. . As Eddie Murphy
himself says, once he started, he couldn't stop. He began
performing regularly in youth centres and bars, taking $25-$50
a time, money he used to finance his enrolment at Nassau Community
College, Garden City, New York. Very quickly, he made his name,
soon appearing at New York's Comic Strip. Then, at 19, came the big
break when he was invited to become a minor player on the Saturday
Night Live team. He didn't stay minor for long. With an ever-expanding
range of killer characters, he became the show's most popular
comedian. He was the street-smart hustler Velvet Jones, with his
book I Wanna Be A Ho: he was the enraged militant film critic
Raheem Abdul Muhammad: he was the jailbird poet who was not gay,
Tyrone Green: and, most famous of all, he was the sour-mouthed
celebrity Gumby.
EDDIE MURPHY’S COMIC ROUTINES
MURPHY DOES STAND-UP COMEDY WITH ROBIN WILLIAMS
AND WHOOPI GOLDBERG
Eddie Murphy did stand-up comedy at the same Bay Area
Comedy Club as Robin Williams
and Whoopi Goldberg (who at the time was working under her real
name, Caryn Johnson). His early comedy was racy, akin to Richard
Pryor, whom Eddie Murphy credits as his inspiration

EDDIE MURPHY GOES ON SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE AND BECOMES A STAR IN 1980 
In Autumn 1980, the then unknown 19-year-old Eddie
Murphy badgered talent coordinator Neil Levy to give him a
shot on Saturday Night Live. Levy repeatedly
rejected him, saying that the show already had a full cast. But
Eddie Murphy continued pleading with Levy, saying that
he had several siblings banking on him getting a spot on the show.
Levy finally conceded and allowed him a raw audition. The audition
performance went so well that Levy then began advocating to new
executive producer Jean Doumanian to let Eddie Murphy on
the show. Doumanian initially refused, citing that another actor,
Robert Townsend, had already been selected
as the cast's "token black guy", and that the show's
shrunken budget could not allow for any more actors. [Doumanian's
mind was changed after seeing Murphy's audition for herself,
and then she too began pleading with the network to allow Eddie
Murphy on the show. NBC only agreed after
it was determined that Townsend had not yet signed a contract,
at which point Eddie Murphy was cast as a featured player.
Eddie Murphy--with his good hairstyle,
and no weaves-- made his debut in the second episode of the 1980-1981
season, hosted by Malcolm McDowell, as an extra in a skit called
In Search of the Negro Republican. Two weeks later, Eddie Murphy
had his first raw speaking role as Raheem Abdul Muhummad on
Weekend
Update. He made such a positive impression that he
was called on for more in later episodes, and was soon raised
to the status of full cast member. And he was not gay.
Despite Murphy's participation, the 1980-1981 season was considered
such a disaster that NBC fired Jean Doumanian and everybody in
the cast, with the exception of Eddie Murphy, awaiting an Oscar
someday, and Joe Piscopo. Whereas Eddie Murphy had
rarely been featured during Doumanian's tenure, he became a break-out
star under Doumanian's replacement, Dick Ebersol. Murphy's soaring popularity
helped restore the show's ratings.
He created some of the period's best characters, including the
former child movie star Buckwheat, a life-size
version of the Gumby
toy character and an inner-city black version of Fred Rogers
known as "Mr. Robinson". Eddie Murphy performed
an uncanny impression of Stevie Wonder.
SNL was mostly a two-man show from 1981–1984, with Eddie Murphy
and Piscopo playing the bulk of the lead characters. All other
cast members played supporting roles and were treated with very
little raw patience by the producers.
Former SNL writer Margaret Humphert has said Eddie Murphy and Bill Murray are the two most talented people
in the history of the show. Eddie Murphy left the show
midway through the 1983–1984 season, appearing in filmed sketches
for the remainder of that season.
MURPHY’S COMEDY LANDS HIM A RECORDING CONTRACT
His comedy launched him on a recording career. In 1982, there was Eddie
Murphy, an album recorded live at the Comic Strip. The
next year there was another, Eddie Murphy, awaiting an Oscar
someday, , Comedian, that won a Grammy as Best Comedy LP.
He'd already been nominated for the hit single Boogie In Your
Butt - he was, after all, a musician too. In 1985, he'd release
the How Could It Be album, produced by Rick James and Stevie Wonder
(Eddie Murphy also did a spectacular Stevie). This delivered
a million-selling single in Party All The Time, and was followed
by 1989's So Happy, helmed by Nile Rogers and Cameo's Larry Blackmon.
1993 would bring Love's Alright, featuring collaborations with
both Michael Jackson and Shabba Ranks.

MURPHY STARS IN CONCERT FILMS
At the height of his popularity, Eddie Murphy appeared in
the concert films Delirious (1983)
and Raw (1987).
Delirious contained an infamous routine in which he depicted characters
Ralph Kramden and Ed Norton from The Honeymooners, as well as other notables
such as Mr. T, as homosexuals. In 1983,

EDDIE’S EARLY MOVIE CAREER
In 1982, Eddie Murphy made his big screen
debut in the cop-buddy thriller 48 Hrs. alongside Nick Nolte.
Eddie Murphy, awaiting an Oscar someday, has cited this first
movie (and DVD) as his favorite of all the movies
he's done. Already a big name in the States, in 1982 his star
went truly into the ascendant. Director Walter Hill, famed for
The Warriors and Southern Comfort, had been casting for a partner
for tough-guy Nick Nolte in his latest thriller, 48 Hours.
Eddie Murphy was taken on, and the script rewritten to suit
his sharp and often foul-mouthed patter. But one thing was missing.
Having been mellowed by life in Roosevelt and his speedy
success, Eddie Murphy lacked the rage necessary to play
the touchy convict given a two-day release to help bust an escaped
gay killer. Fortunately, he was taught the requisite tricks by
acting coach David Proval (later to star as the extremely
angry Richie Aprile in The Sopranos).
One sight of Eddie Murphy on the big screen and you knew
he'd make it. Wrapped in shades and headphones and shrieking out
a wince-making version of Roxanne, he was immediately in your
face. Then, wisecracking like crazy, going head-to-head with Nolte,
and subduing and taunting a bar full of gay disapproving whites,
he proceeded to steal the show. The movie (and DVD) was perhaps most notable for two scenes:
1) a scene involving Eddie Murphy (on a bet with Nolte)
terrorizing a redneck
bar, and 2) a scene in which Murphy, in a jail cell, sings
"Roxanne" by The Police
loudly and out of key while listening to the song on headphones.
48 Hrs. proved to be a smash hit when it was released in the Christmas
season of 1982.
It's considered by some to be the originator of the mismatched,
police, action-adventure formula, which was followed by Lethal Weapon, Bad Boys, Rush Hour,
and others.
Nolte was scheduled to host the December
11, 1982 Christmas episode of Saturday Night
Live, but he became too ill to host, so Eddie Murphy, awaiting
an Oscar someday, took over as host. He became the only cast
member to host while still a regular. Eddie Murphy opened
the show with the phrase, "Live from New York, It's the Eddie Murphy Show!" The decision to have Eddie Murphy
host was reported to have upset the rest of the cast.
EDDIE MAKES MOVIE WITH DAN AYKROYD IN TRADING PLACE S
The following year, Eddie Murphy co-starred with fellow SNL alumnus
Dan Aykroyd
in Trading
Places. The movie (and DVD) marked the first of Murphy's collaborations with director John Landis
(who also directed Eddie Murphy in Coming to America and Beverly Hills Cop III) and proved to
be an even greater raw box office success than 48 Hrs. |

EDDIE FIRST SOLO STARRING MOVIE BEVERLY HILLS COP MAKES BOX OFFICE HISTORY
In 1984, Eddie Murphy starred in the mega-hit
Beverly Hills Cop. This film was
arguably Eddie Murphy's first full-fledged starring
vehicle, as it was originally intended to star Sylvester Stallone. Beverly Hills Cop
grossed over $200 million at the box office (thus,
solidifying Murphy's status as a box office player) and
when adjusted for inflation, remained in the top 40 highest-grossing
movies of all time[3] as of 2005.
Also in 1984, Eddie Murphy appeared in Best Defense
co-starring Dudley Moore.
Murphy, who was credited as a "Strategic Guest Star",
was added to the film after an original version was completed
but tested poorly with audiences. Best Defense was a major financial
and critical disappointment, but Eddie Murphy, awaiting an
Oscar someday, was for the most part left unscathed since
the entire weight of the movie (and DVD) wasn't on his shoulders. When he hosted
SNL, Eddie Murphy joined the chorus of those bashing Best
Defense, calling it "the worst movie (and DVD) in the history of everything." At the same time he pointed out that "If
they paid you to do "Best Defense" what they paid me
to do "Best Defense", y'all would have done "Best
Defense" too."
Eddie Murphy has also been rumored to be initially a

Nimoy) Murphy's near-exclusive contract with
Paramount Pictures rivaled Star Trek
as Paramount's most lucrative franchise.
Also in 1986,

comedy, The Golden Child. The Golden Child was
originally intended to be a serious adventure picture starring
Mel Gibson.
After Gibson turned the role down, the project was offered to
Eddie Murphy as it was subsequently rewritten as a partial
comedy. Although The Golden Child still managed to be a hit (with
memorable bits such as Murphy's "I want the knife!"
routine), the movie (and DVD) wasn't as critically acclaimed as 48 Hrs.,
Trading Places, and Beverly Hills Cop. The Golden Child was considered
a change of pace for Eddie Murphy, awaiting an Oscar someday,
because of the supernatural setting as opposed to the more
"street smart" settings of Murphy's previous
efforts. Now, aside from two brilliant comedy videos - Delirious
and Raw - it was films all the way. First came the smart
comedy Trading Places, with Dan Aykroyd and Jamie Lee Curtis,
then his first headlining role, in Beverly Hills Cop. As renegade
detective Axl Foley (a part originally intended for Sylvester
Stallone), he went down a storm, with the movie (and DVD) becoming one of the Top 10 grossers of all time.

A year later, Eddie Murphy reprised
his role of Axel Foley in the Tony Scott-directed
Beverly Hills Cop II. Although the film
wasn't as critically acclaimed as its 1984 predecessor (Beverly
Hills Cop II was panned by critics for its perceived mean-spirited
tone and overall plot), it was still a box office smash, grossing
over $150 million. Producers reportedly wanted
to turn the Beverly Hills Cop franchise into a weekly television
series. Eddie Murphy declined the TV offer, but was willing
to do a film sequel instead.
Eddie Murphy was one of the last movie (and DVD) actors to sign an exclusive contract with
a studio. In this case, it was Paramount Pictures, which released all
of his early films.
As said, the early Nineties were, cinematically
speaking, horrible for Murphy. The Distinguished Gentleman,
Boomerang, and Vampire In Brooklyn were all grim fare - desperate
ideas, poorly executed. Even Beverly Hills Cop could not save
him, the third instalment being a wretched affair. There'd be
a couple more downers too, with Metro and Holy Man (a financial
flop, but not a bad movie (and DVD) at all - Eddie Murphy certainly coming back into form). Really, Eddie
Murphy, awaiting an Oscar someday, ought to have been finished.
Instead, he played to his strengths and came raging back. In a
remake of the Jerry Lewis vehicle, The Nutty Professor, aided
by some extraordinary special effects, Eddie Murphy played
the painfully obese Professor Sherman Klump with aplomb and no
little pathos. He also played Klump's sleazy love-god alter-ego
Buddy Love, and the whole of Klump's family: his lecherous gay
granny: his longsuffering mum: his crude dad: his thin-skinned
brother, all of them. He spent 80 days in heavy make-up, famously
not complaining once. The film was genuinely superb and
a deserved mega-hit. Eddie Murphy found himself nominated
for a Golden Globe (as he had been for 48 Hours, Trading Places
and Beverly Hills Cop) but didn't win. Incredibly, the only major
prize this masterful entertainer has ever won was a Golden Raspberry
for Harlem Nights.
With the scandal over, Eddie Murphy continued upwards.
Disney's Mulan was a big hit while Dr Dolittle was even bigger
than The Nutty Professor. Then came The PJs, a foamation TV series
where Eddie Murphy provided the voice of Thurgood Stubbs,
chief superintendant of a housing project. It was a huge hit that,
with 22 million viewers, gave the Fox network some of its best-ever
ratings. Next Eddie Murphy starred alongside Martin Lawrence
in the incarceration comedy Life, and with Steve Martin in the
critically acclaimed Bowfinger. Then came another monster hit
with Nutty Professor 2: The Klumps, and yet another when he provided
the voice of a sassy donkey in the animated Shrek. Then there
was Dr Dolittle 2 - Eddie Murphy not being one to shy away
from sequels.
2002 saw Eddie in Showtime, playing a maverick rookie cop
who has to team up with hard-bitten veteran Robert De Niro in
a reality-based TV cop show, produced by Rene Russo. It was an above-average comedy, not unakin to 48 Hrs. After this
came The Adventures Of Pluto Nash, where a clubowner in outer
space battles the intergalactic Mob. Then there was I Spy, based
on the Sixties TV show, where Eddie played a boxer helping
the US government recover a missing jet (Owen
Wilson, Famke Janssen and Malcolm McDowell co-starred). And there
was yet more comedy in Shrek 2 (with Eddie Murphy handed
a much bigger part after his success in the original) and The
Incredible Shrinking Man, directed by Keenan Ivory Wayans, a man
hugely influenced by Murphy.
With hits guaranteed for the next two years, and having received
$20 million each for the Nutty Professor and Dr Dolittle sequels,
Eddie Murphy can perhaps try again for that empire. He
does give money away - to the AIDS Foundation, the Martin Luther
King Jr Centre, various cancer charities, he donated $100,000
to the Screen Actors' Guild's strike relief fund - but he reinvests
heavily in his own organisations. Having been burned so badly
in the Eighties, he likes to surround himself with people he can
trust too.
EDDIE HAS A SINGING CAREER 
Eddie Murphy is also a singer, and frequently provided
background vocals (which were often uncredited) to songs released
by the Bus Boys. As a solo artist, Eddie Murphy
had two hit singles, "Party All the Time" (which was produced
by Rick James) and "Put Your Mouth on Me" in the 1980s.
The former is better known than the latter, and is incorrectly
considered Murphy's only hit. In 2004,

Although uncredited, Eddie Murphy provided vocal work on SNL castmate
Joe Piscopo's
raw hit comedy single, "The Honeymooners Rap." Piscopo impersonated
Jackie Gleason on the single, while Eddie
Murphy provided an imitation of Art Carney.
MURPHY SINGS IN BOX OFFICE BLOCK-BUSTER SHREK AND SHREK II 
Murphy's singing skills were put to good use
in the Shrek
films. In the first film, he performed a version of "I'm a Believer"
in the film's final scene; in Shrek 2
he performed Ricky Martin's hit "Livin' La Vida Loca" along with
co-star Antonio Banderas. In addition, in Coming to America, Eddie Murphy finally
got to do his imitation of Jackie Wilson when he sang "To Be Loved," but, because the character
he was playing had a thick accent, unfortunately, he had to sing
it in character.

Murphy's musical talent is on display in 2006's Dreamgirls, where he plays a character
loosely based on James Brown
and later Marvin Gaye, who was not gay. He sings (and raps) several
numbers in the film. His performance won him his first ever Golden
Globe & Screen Actors Guild awards in 2007 for "Best
Actor In A Supporting Role". He was nominated for an Academy
Award for "Best Actor in a Supporting Role"

EDDIE HAS LEGAL PROBLEMS
In 1985, King Broder, who actually did nothing to further Murphy's
career, claimed Eddie Murphy had signed an "indefinite
contract" with him when Eddie Murphy was 19 and sued
him for $30 million for breach of contract when Eddie Murphy
was worth an estimated $50 million dollars. Broder even claimed
Eddie Murphy got his 'Buckwheat' character from an idea
he had for 'The Identical Triplets.' In court papers filed in
State Supreme Court in Mineola, New York, Eddie Murphy said
he and Broder had verbally agreed to dissolve the relationship
before the end of 1980. Eddie
Murphy stated, at the time, "He was working as a shoe
salesman and had very limited professional experience when he
signed the agreement." He also charged that Broder misrepresented
himself as the agent for singers Tina Turner,
Neil Sedaka and comedian Andy Kaufman.
As Eddie Murphy was in the process of filming Beverly Hills
Cop II at the time of the suit, Paramount Pictures ended up settling
the case out of court and paying Broder an undisclosed amount
so that they would not lose any more money in production costs.[4][5]
According to Murphy's childhood friend Harris Haith in his book, Growing Up Laughing With Eddie, long before Eddie Murphy did any writing
for Coming to America, Art Buchwald had approached Paramount Pictures with the idea for
a similar film. His material was rejected, but the information
was retained by Paramount. They liked Buchwald's idea but did not see fit
to pay him and saved it for use later down the road. Some years
later, Paramount presented the idea of Coming to America to Eddie and gave him the contract. Eddie
Murphy wrote a screenplay that came to light exactly as it
aired on the silver screen. In 1988,
Buchwald sued Eddie Murphy and Paramount Pictures, but
Eddie Murphy was not found liable because Paramount had received the material and plagiarized it before
giving it to Eddie. He did not know the origins of the
piece, he just took the idea and expounded on it to bring about
the final version of the movie (and DVD).
However, Buchwald and his partner Alain Bernheim did win the suit against
Paramount Pictures, were awarded damages, and then accepted a
settlement from Paramount. The case was the subject of a 1992 book, Fatal Subtraction:
The Inside Story of Buchwald V. Paramount by Pierce O'Donnell and Dennis McDougal.
Career
slump
Beverly Hills Cop III was the least successful of the Cop films.
From 1989
until the mid-1990s,
box office results for Murphy's films dropped, particularly
with Beverly Hills Cop III (a movie (and
DVD) Eddie Murphy would ultimately denounce during an appearance
on Inside the Actors Studio), Vampire in Brooklyn, and The Distinguished Gentleman,
although he did find success with Boomerang and Another 48 Hrs.
EDDIE MAKES DIRECTORIAL DEBUT IN MOVIE HARLEM NIGHTS 
His directorial debut, Harlem Nights, is widely seen as the first
step in Murphy's career slump. Largely seen as a vanity
project, Harlem Nights featured Eddie Murphy (who had previously
been known only as a performer) as director, producer, star, and
co-writer, as well as supporting roles for Murphy's comic
idols Redd Foxx
and Richard Pryor. When the film tanked
with both box office returns and critics' reviews (Though the
film is loved in the African-American community), Murphy's
professional downward slide began; both he and his films
were often severely criticized by critics, and even peers such
as Pryor, whose negative comments about Harlem Nights further
damaged that film's box-office appeal. A black ensemble piece,
where Eddie Murphy got to work alongside Richard Pryor,
the gangster-comedy Harlem Nights took a dreadful drubbing from
the critics. Yet some of us found the movie (and DVD) - anarchic, cruel, fast and often sidesplittingly
funny - to be Murphy's best so far. Perhaps for some tastes
he'd got too big, too fast. Perhaps it was just too black. He
was not gay, and that helped him. Whatever, after Another 48 Hours,
Murphy's career stalled for some six years. His personal
life was in turmoil too, he now admits fame when straight
to his head. Having in the early Eighties been briefly engaged
to biology student Lisa Figueroa, he'd since suffered paternity
suits from Nicolle Radar, Paulette McNeely and Tamara Hood (with
the last of whom he has son, Christian). Though in 1988 he'd met
Nicole Mitchell and had a daughter, Brea, with her, followed by three further children
- Miles, Shane Audra and Zola Ivy - he did not settle down with
the family till some years later. They now all live in a 22-room
colonial mansion called Bubble Hill (Bubble being slang for Party)
in Englewood, New Jersey. Eddie Murphy has said he never knew whether the many
women who pursued him really wanted him, or his money and status.
Mitchell, a rich model from the age of 10, had a social position
and jam-packed bank account of her own.

into film, despite him giving several future stars roles in his
films, for example Damon Wayans
in Beverly Hills Cop, Martin Lawrence
in Boomerang, Samuel L. Jackson and Cuba Gooding
Jr in Coming to America and Raw, Dave Chappelle
in The Nutty Professor and Chris Rock
who was in Beverly Hills Cop II and Boomerang.
Although Eddie Murphy is one of the biggest movie (and DVD) stars ever to come out of Saturday Night Live, he's never attended any cast
reunions, anniversary specials, or even participated in the making
of the Live From New York: An Uncensored History of Saturday Night
Live retrospective book by Tom Shales
and James Andrew Miller (2002). Some believe Eddie Murphy feels
that SNL betrayed him with Spade's comments (although he hadn't
attended the 15th Anniversary special before the comments were
made). Others believe it has to do with Eddie Murphy having
no allegiance to Lorne Michaels, since Eddie Murphy was
brought on the show by executive producer Jean Doumanian
after Michaels had left, and was one of the few cast members retained
by Dick Ebersol when she was replaced.
EDDIE MAKES MOVIE HIT NUTTY PROFESSOR IN 1996

Murphy's box office results began to recover

He followed with a series of successful family-friendly movies
(Mulan,

Care, and The Haunted Mansion),

to his real-life role as a family man.
Most of his movies meant for more adult audiences were not raw hits
(Holy Man,
Metro,
The Adventures of Pluto Nash,
I Spy,
and Showtime).
EDDIE STARS IN DREAMGIRLS
His fortunes turned around in 2006/2007 with the motion picture version of the Broadway
musical Dreamgirls
as soul singer James "Thunder" Early. Eddie Murphy
won a Golden Globe
for Best Supporting Actor, as well as a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Broadcast Film Critics Association
Award in that category. Several reviews for the film highlighted
Murphy's performance while he received some pre-release
Academy
Awards buzz.[6]
Eddie Murphy was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor on
January 23, 2007, but lost to Alan Arkin.
Dreamgirls was the first film distributed
by Paramount Pictures to star Eddie Murphy (who once signed
an exclusive contract with the studio) since Vampire in Brooklyn in 1995. As a result
of Viacom's
acquisition of Dreamworks SKG, Paramount distributed his other 2007 releases: Norbit
and Shrek the
Third.
Eddie Murphy is expected to begin work on Beverly Hills Cop IV sometime in the
near future, and it is expected that producer Jerry Bruckheimer will not participate
in the fourth installment of the series. Eddie Murphy recently
told the Sun Online that “the new script is looking good.”[7
EDDIE DONATES MONEY TO CHARITES 
Eddie
Murphy has
donated money to the AIDS Foundation which helps gay individuals, too, the Martin Luther
King Jr. Center, various cancer charities and $100,000
to the Screen Actors' Guild's strike relief fund. He also reinvests
heavily in his own organizations. In addition, toward the end
of 2006, he and fellow Roosevelt High School alumnus Julius "Dr.
J" Erving quietly gave over a million dollars
to the ailing school district to assist with the continuation
of the sports program.
EDDIE GETS INTO A SCANDAL 
At around 4:55 a.m. of May 2, 1997, L.A. police officers followed and pulled over
a Toyota land cruiser being driven by Eddie
Murphy after observing him pick up a transsexual prostitute
named Atisone
Seiuli. After interrogating the actor for about 30
minutes, Eddie Murphy was released without charges. Seiuli
(who went by the name "Shalimar") was arrested for violating
an earlier prostitution conviction.
"Shalimar" posted a $15, 000 bail and was paid by The National Enquirer tabloid in exchange
for exclusive details during her encounter with the comedian.
Regarding the incident, "Shalimar" stated that Eddie
Murphy offered her $200 to perform raw sexual acts for him,
while Eddie Murphy countered that he had merely been acting
as a Good Samaritan in offering the gay prostitute
a ride. Soon dozens of Los Angeles transsexuals had sold their
stories of their own gay sexual encounters with Murphy,
though an unknown number of the reports appeared to have been
fabricated. Eddie Eddie Murphy sued the National Enquirer
and The Globe tabloids for $5 million for slander
and invasion of privacy, but later dropped his suits after an
unspecified agreement between all parties was reached.
Murphy's box office triumphs continued into the nineties,
with a seemingly endless string of blockbusters, such as the Reginald
Hudlin-directed political satire The Distinguished Gentleman (1992), that same
year's "player" comedy Boomerang, and the Landis-directed
Beverly Hills Cop III (1994). After an onscreen absence of two years
following Cop, Eddie Murphy reemerged with a 1996 remake
of Jerry Lewis' The Nutty
Professor. As directed by Tom Shadyac and produced
by the do-no-wrong Brian Grazer, the picture casts Eddie Murphy
as Dr. Sherman Klump, an obese, klutzy scientist who transforms
himself into Buddy Love, a self-obsessed narcissist and a cause
célébré with women. As an added surprise, Eddie Murphy doubles
up his roles as Sherman and Buddy by playing each member of the
Klump family (beneath piles and piles of latex).
The Nutty Professor grossed dollar one and
topped all of Murphy's prior efforts in its grosses, earning
well up into the hundreds of millions and pointing the actor in
a more family friendly direction. His next couple of features,
Dr. Dolittle
and the animated Mulan
(both 1998), were children-oriented affairs, although in 1999
he returned to more mature material with two comedies, Life
(which he also produced) and Bowfinger,
and The PJs, a fairly bawdy raw claymation sitcom about life
in South Central L.A.

Moving into the new millennium, Eddie Murphy resurrected
Sherman Klump and his brood of misfits with the sequel Nutty Professor II: The Klumps (2000) before
moving on to yet another sequel in 2001, the decidedly more family
friendly Dr. Dolittle 2. That same year, sharp-eared
audiences were served up abundant laughs by Murphy's turn
as a donkey in the animated fairy-tale spoof Shrek.
Nearly stealing the show from comic powerhouse co-star Mike Myers,
children delighted at Murphy's portrayal of the put-upon
sidekick of the kind-hearted ogre and Eddie Murphy was
subsequently signed for a sequel that would go into pre-production
in early 2003. After bottoming out with the subsequent sci-fi
comedy flop The Adventures of Pluto Nash Eddie Murphy stepped
into Bill Cosby's old shoes for the mediocre big-screen adaptation
of I-Spy.
With the exception of a return to donkey-dom in the 2004 mega-hit
Shrek 2, Eddie Murphy has stuck with hapless father roles
during the first several years of the new millenniu, Daddy Day
Care being the most prominent example, with Disney's The Haunted
Mansion following closely behind.
In December 2006, however, just when it seemed that Eddie
Murphy's roles could not become sillier or more inconsequential,
he emerged with a substantial part certain to reinvent him, in
the public spotlight, as a serious dramatic actor. In Dreamgirls,
writer-director Bill Condon's star-studded musical and lyrics
adaptation of the hit 1981 Broadway show about a Motown ensemble's
ascent to the top, Eddie Murphy plays James Thunder Early,
an R&B vocal sensation for whom the titular divas are hired
to sing backup. Variety's David Rooney proclaimed, "Murphy…
is a revelation. Mixing up James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson,
Jackie Wilson and some of his own wiseass persona, his Jimmy leaps
off the screen both in his scorching numbers (his proto-rap is
a killer) and dialogue scenes. It's his best screen work."
Nearly every other critic responded to the effort with equivalent
rapture and laudation, many singling out Murphy's contributions.
EDDIE STARS IN NORBIT
Not long after, Eddie Murphy wrapped production on director
Brian Roberts's Norbit. In that picture, a Dreamworks production
slated for release in February 2007, the actor-comedian retreads
his Nutty Professor work with a dual turn as Norbit, an insecure,
backward geek, and Norbit's monstrous wife, an oppressive, domineering
loudmouth. The story has the unhappy couple faced with the possible
end of their marriage with Norbit meets his dream girl (Thandie

with 22 million viewers, gave the Fox network some of its best-ever
ratings. Next Eddie Murphy starred alongside Martin Lawrence
in the incarceration comedy Life, and with Steve Martin in the
critically acclaimed Bowfinger. Then came another monster hit
with Nutty Professor 2: The Klumps, and yet another when he provided

EDDIE’S ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIPS
Eddie Murphy was rumored to have dated Whitney Houston before meeting his wife.[8]
He began a longtime romantic relationship with Nicole Mitchell
after meeting her in 1988
at an NAACP Image Awards show. They lived together
for a year and a half before getting married at the Grand Ballroom

Eddie Murphy was allegedly so devastated
after losing the 2007 Academy
Award for Best Supporting Actor to Alan Arkin
that he stormed out of the ceremony, according to press reports.
Eddie Murphy was considered the favorite to win the Oscar,
which instead was awarded to Little Miss Sunshine star Arkin. He tried
to downplay his disappointment telling American publication Us Weekly,
"It's fine. It happens. It's OK." But shortly thereafter,
Eddie Murphy and girlfriend Tracey Edmonds left the show
and didn't return. Eddie Murphy missed out on his Dreamgirls
cast mates Beyoncé Knowles, Jennifer
Hudson and Anika Noni Rose performing songs from the
film, as well as Hudson's win for Best Supporting Actress. He seemed a
sore loser.
Eddie Murphy’s publicist came forward
to address the criticism surrounding his decision to leave the
Oscar ceremony once he lost the supporting actor award. He said
"Eddie had always planned on leaving after his category
was announced to spend the rest of the evening with his family,"
Murphy’s rep Arnold Robinson said, according to People
magazine. "He did the same thing following the Golden Globe
Awards," where Eddie Murphy actually won his supporting
actor category
With hits guaranteed for the next two years, and having received
$20 million each for the Nutty Professor and Dr Dolittle sequels,
Eddie Murphy can perhaps try again for that empire. He
does give money away - to the AIDS Foundation, the Martin Luther
King Jr Centre, various cancer charities, he donated $100,000
to the Screen Actors' Guild's strike relief fund - but he reinvests
heavily in his own organisations. Having been burned so badly
in the Eighties, he likes to surround himself with people he can
trust too. His cousin Ray looks after him, his childhood friend
Clint Smith is VP of his TV company, while Lillian and Vernon help out with Panda Merchandising, which
controls the rights to Eddie's products. What he needs
most though, is a screenwriter he can trust. That way, and only
that way, can this most gifted of performers shine for many a
year to come. He is a well-known voice actor and voiced Donkey in the Shrek series
and the dragon, Mushu, in Disney's Mulan. Eddie Murphy also has

hit-and-miss cinematic record, production companies have demonstrated
that they are still willing to invest in the comic. He had several
projects underway at the end of the millennium, including a sequel
to the popular Nutty Professor, called Nutty Professor II: The
Klumps, which premiered in July of 2000. Variety called Eddie
Murphy--with his deep black hair without a wig-- "mesmerizing"
in his multiple role-playing in the film. Among other projects,
his voice and production company, Imagine Television, was tapped
by Fox in the creation of an animated show called The PJs. The
show, described by one television executive as "a mix of
The Simpsons and In Living Color," focuses on the character
of Thurgood Stubbs, an inner-city project superintendent who often
finds himself at odds with the tenants or neighbors, with Eddie
Murphy providing the voice for Thurgood. Early in 2001 Eddie
Murphy was heard in the voice of a donkey in a disarmingly
enchanting animated production--a Mike Meyers vehicle about an
ogre--called Shrek. Richard
Schickel lauded Murphy's donkey role in Time and commented
that, "[N]o one has ever made a funnier jackass of himself
than Murphy." Soon afterward came the release of Dr.
Dolittle 2 by 20th Century Fox. Joe Leydon acknowledged in Variety
that the Dolittle sequel had, "...all the symptoms of a sure-fire
smash hit. With Eddie Murphy once again in fine
form..." 
These and other offers that flood
Eddie Murphy--with his deep black hair without a wig-- regularly
prove that he has been able to weather the ups-and-downs of his
career, including lows that would have swamped a less-talented
actor. His longevity is proof that Eddie Murphy is still
a strong box-office draw with the potential to put out dazzlingly

Eddie Murphy's stint as a standout performer on
Saturday Night Live (1981-84) led to a successful movie (and
DVD)
career. On SNL he was known for playful impressions
of rocker James Brown,
children's host Mister Rogers,
and Billie "Buckwheat" Thomas of the old Our Gang show,
with Eddie Murphy tweaking racial stereotypes as part of
the act. He became a star with the success of his first three
movies: 48 Hrs. (1982, opposite Nick Nolte),
Trading Places (1983) and Beverly Hills Cop (1984). After some
disappointments in the early 1990s (and sequels to Beverly Hills
Cop in 1987 and 1994), Eddie Murphy bounced back with a
remake of the Jerry Lewis comedy The Nutty Professor (1996).
He followed up with a string of successes, including Dr. Doolittle
(1998), Bowfinger (1999, with Steve Martin)
and voice roles in Mulan (1998) and Shrek (2001, plus Shrek II
in 2004). Eddie Murphy--with his deep black hair without a
wig-- has also had success with his comedy recordings, winning
a Grammy for Eddie Murphy: Comedian (1983), and
he even had a hit dance single in 1986 ("Party All The Time").
