Cardboard is the
newest material option for making pallets. Initially you would think that
cardboard could not be strong enough to be used in a pallet, however, manufacturers
claim that they can build cardboard pallets that will support more than 2500
pounds by using special corrugated cardboard construction techniques.
Advantages of Corrugated Cardboard Pallet
Cardboard pallets
have some significant advantages over wood and plastic. Cardboard is much
lighter than either, which can help keep shipping costs down by minimizing
weight. Cardboard is also relatively clean and, because it is totally recyclable,
can be cost effectively used for one way transport.
Corrugated Cardboard Pallet
Efficiency
For those who have
ever worked in a retail or industrial environment, pallets are a well known
and simple tool.
The relatively heavy,
bulky, and in turn sturdy piece of hardware is usually made of wood, although
newer versions are now shipping in a lighter plastic. Pallets are generally
used for moving large shipments of goods.
What does a pallet look like?
A pallet usually features a series of wooden bars nailed to two side-mounted
boards. Generally, the top-facing side of a pallet contains the most boards,
since it’s responsible for bearing the shipment’s load.
There are usually fewer, albeit thicker,
boards nailed underneath. The design is perfectly laid out to fit the average
forklift or jacking device.
Where
do you find pallets?
Pallets are a major part of the retail industry. For those who have ever worked
in a grocery store, they know that pallets are an everyday reality.
Generally, three days a week a supply truck
brings groceries – be they produce, dairy, or grocery items – which are packed
together, wrapped, and loaded on pallets.
A driver (or employee) unloads the “skids”
– as they are sometimes called – into the store’s backroom using a “jack”
or jacklift. From there, the wrapping is cut, the boxes are taken off the
pallet (or skid).
Once the pallet is empty, it’s taken around
back and returned to the standard shipping company for reuse. It’s a handy
and tree-friendly way to do business.
How much do pallets cost?
Most pallets cost retailers anywhere from $20 to $70, although there can be
arrangements made with shipping companies to share these costs (since they’re
constantly being moved about).
Generally, pallets are not available to
individuals not working for a business, but their simple design means just
about anyone could build one (although considering the type of use, this should
be very carefully done).
Where
does the pallet come from?
Pallets were first brought into industry and retail during the first years
of the twentieth century, although wooden boxes and crates were still far
more commonly used.
The first hand-lift truck was invented in
1887, and many of these designs are still in use in smaller grocery stores
and retail outlets today.
Moving materials efficiently often requires
the use of a forklift and a stacking device known as a pallet or skid. Traditionally,
pallets are constructed from wooden planks and spacers, creating a dual platform
for stacking products and inserting the blades of a tow motor or forklift.
There are some drawbacks associated with
the use of wooden pallets or skids, however. Wood is expensive, heavy, and
potentially damaging to the floor or the stacked products. One worker cannot
carry many traditional wooden pallets, and a stack of wooden skids can become
a fire hazard.
Corrugated Cardboard Pallet
Enter the cardboard pallet. A cardboard
pallet is constructed out of corrugated cardboard sheets bonded with strong
paper.
A bottom layer is constructed from flat
cardboard sheets, then spacers are created to allow for forklift blades. Two
layers of cardboard form the top layer, upon which lightweight cargo may be
stacked. Currently, the cardboard pallet is considered to be a disposable
commodity with limited capacities.
Cardboard do pallets offer a few advantages
over their bulkier wooden counterparts, however.
No Nails in the Corrugated Cardboard Pallet
Since no nails are used in the construction
of a cardboard pallet, there is less potential for damage to the storage area
or the products stacked on it. Workers can carry several cardboard skids back
to a disposal or storage area, as opposed to using a forklift to stack and
store heavy wooden pallets. Replacing a worn cardboard pallet is much less
expensive than reordering wooden pallets from a manufacturer.
There are still some technical issues which
must be worked out before cardboard pallets can replace other forms. Corrugated
cardboard is relatively strong compared to other paper products, but it has
definite weight-bearing limitations.
The act of handling a fully loaded cardboard
pallet alone damages the material. Pallets and skids must be designed to allow
for forklift access, which makes some traditional engineering methods unworkable.
Corrugated Cardboard Pallet and Forklift
blades
Bracing for a cardboard pallet cannot intrude
into the space reserved for the forklift blades. This means the pallet design
can only include bracing going in one direction between the platform layers,
or using spacers to allow for forklift access from both directions. Wooden
pallets are inherently strong enough to withstand the stress of an unsupported
top layer, but a cardboard pallet will often fail structurally when heavier
loads are stacked on it.

Where does the pallet come from?
Pallets were first brought into industry and retail during the first years
of the twentieth century, although wooden boxes and crates were still far
more commonly used.
The first hand-lift truck was invented in
1887, and many of these designs are still in use in smaller grocery stores
and retail outlets today.
Moving materials efficiently often requires
the use of a forklift and a stacking device known as a pallet or skid. Traditionally,
pallets are constructed from wooden planks and spacers, creating a dual platform
for stacking products and inserting the blades of a tow motor or forklift.
There are some drawbacks associated with the use of wooden pallets or skids,
however.
Corrugated Cardboard
Pallet Construction Better
Wood is expensive, heavy, and potentially
damaging to the floor or the stacked products. One worker cannot carry many
traditional wooden pallets, and a stack of wooden skids can become a fire
hazard.
Since no nails are used in
the construction of a cardboard pallet, there is less potential for damage
to the storage area or the products stacked on it.
Workers can carry several cardboard skids
back to a disposal or storage area, as opposed to using a forklift to stack
and store heavy wooden pallets. Replacing a worn cardboard pallet is much
less expensive than reordering wooden pallets from a manufacturer.
Bracing for a cardboard pallet cannot intrude
into the space reserved for the forklift blades. This means the pallet design
can only include bracing going in one direction between the platform layers,
or using spacers to allow for forklift access from both directions.
Wooden pallets are inherently strong enough
to withstand the stress of an unsupported top layer, but a cardboard pallets
will often fail structurally when heavier loads are stacked on it.
