Natural Skin Care and Skin Treatment
How You Get Dry Skin
The skin is the largest and one of
the most intriguing organs of the body, accounting for 16 per cent of
body weight. The skin is continually repairing and renewing itself.
When you are young, the main skin complaints are greasy skin and acne.

But as you grow older, the you get
dry skin and the challenge is to counteract the dryness of the
skin. However, you can have celebrity skin no matter what your age,
race or color. The secret is to understand how your skin functions,
and avoid skin problems by taking care of it properly. Skin is characterized
into various different types.
Normal Skin Texture and Tissue
With the best skin care,
the skin is firm with dense connective tissue and muscle fibers. It
is supple
and has numerous elastic fibers that
are in excellent condition. The healthy skin appears
dense, overall the complexion is matte. It secretes just enough sebum.
The texture is fine. There are no visible pores and it is very
smooth skin. Sexy skin has an even color with
good circulation.
The sensitive skin has fine
texture with thin surface and blood vessels very close to the surface.

As a result, it can be easily affected
by internal and external factors causing blotchiness, redness, increased
warmth, dehydration and irritation. The sensitive skin can feel
taunt over the bone areas and have tendency toward dryness. Sensitive
skin can be itchy skin. While there is always the danger
of over stimulating the skin, it is important to increase the cellular
function to improve elasticity.
As in the picture below, you may have
mysterious skin. Generally, the skin layer is very thin with unbalanced
protective film (moisture).

Sensitive skin and dry skin
is easily stimulated by stress, causing vasodilation, chronic dehydration,
and often arctic oil production. A person with dry sensitive skin will
tend to get drier under stress, whereas as person who is oily tends
to easily erupt with acne and show a greasy film.
There are two type of dry skin.
These conditions often coexist, contributing toward the predisposition
to wrinkles, dehydration and irritation. A skin may become dry because
it has lost its superficial moisture. This can happen, even on skins
that produce too much oil. The surface of the skin feels taunt, is flaky
and often slightly itchy. People can hardly stand itchy skin!
The second condition, which is more problematic,
is where the oil gland don't produce enough sebum. This is true for
under active skin. This is where proactive skin care
is in order. The skin often looks normal to fine in texture, but it
is dull. The follicles are quite invisible. The skin is delicate,
easily irritated and rough. It may be prone to reddening or may be quite
sallow (yellowish). It usually feels tight.
Those with dehydrated skin have
a serious skin problem. The skin is scaly, taunt, with superficial lines
and premature aging. Dehydration is caused by loss of water on
the skin surface.
Mature skin looks withered which is
caused primarily by deficiency in nutritional components. The sensitive
skin appears looser and thinner. The elastic fibers are degenerate
due to water loss while the fat tissue reduce in thickness, causing
a general breakdown in skin elasticity.
There is a dramatic reduction in oil production
causing dryness. The circulation is reduced due to cholesterol deposits
in the arterioles. Pigmentary disorders may result causing brown spots.
May have tendency toward couperose (dilated capillaries) skin, making
it red skin.
Couperose skin is a condition that is caused by weakness in capillary
vessels. It is characterized by a localized reddening of the
skin.
Oily skin
Oily skin is characterized by overabundant secretion of the
sebaceous gland. This condition if incorrectly treated by the individual
give rise to other problems. This is where acne skin care
is often desired. Contrary to belief , this skin can be sensitive and
is often mishandled by harsh products designed to dry out the oiliness
of the skin. Such products eliminate the oil on the surface and by doing
so causes the sebaceous glands to produce more oil. This would be a
skin disorder.
There are two types of oily skin.
Oily skin which oozes oils causing a shiny wet appearance ( seborrhea
oleosa) and oily skin which clogs the pores (seborrhea sicca). It has
a collection of harden sebum and dead cells in the pores. The successful
treatment of oily skin requires patience, since excessive oil production
is a symptom of and internal problem.
Acne
Acne is a chronic inflammatory disorder that occurs in
the adolescent as well as the adult. The skin is thick, coarse, with
large follicular orifices (pores). It is shiny with blocked pores (opened and closed
blackheads). It contains pustules with white or yellow tinged centers.
Hormones are a very big cause of acne. Acne skin care product
varieties abound because of this!
Puberty causes the secretion of certain
gonadotrophic hormones by the anterior pituitary gland. The target organs
of these gonadotrophic hormones are gonads (the ovaries in woman or
testes in man). In addition, the adrenal cortex is stimulated at puberty.
Both
of these glands, the adrenal cortex and the gonads, are encouraged to
excrete large quantities of steroid hormones into the circulatory system.
In the male, the influence of adrenal hormones on bodily changes is
overshadowed by the action of testicular hormones.
In female, the female estrogen produces
by the ovaries works in conjunction with the male androgens from the
adrenal cortex to create secondary sex characteristics. This sudden
surge of male hormones (called androgens) in both sexes results in bodily
hair growth as well as increase in oil flow from the sebaceous glands.
This requires the best skin care available.
This increase in oil flow does not
automatically lead to acne, but it sets the stage and no acne
is possible without it. Only a small amount is needed to stimulate the
oil glands, and it is impossible to distinguish the adrenal levels of
acne patient’s form those of clear skinned types.
Chronically oily skin
People with chronically oily skin
and lingering acne have been found to harbor and especially active enzyme
that converts testosterone, one of the androgens, into a more potent
form called dihydro-testosterone. This is the factor directly responsible
for releasing more oil.
It is thought that if the effect dihydro-testosterone
on the sebaceous glands could be counteracted then acne could be controlled.
The challenge lies in accomplishing this without tampering with the
body's normal hormonal makeup. Genes are also believed to play a stage
setting role, since acne and its degree of severity
often run in families. Heredity can help determine the amount of oil
you body produces, the kind of bacteria nesting in your glands, the
strength of your follicular walls, and other factor linked to either
your resistance or your susceptibility.
Occasionally the onset of acne
in adulthood can signal the presence of pituitary, adrenal, or ovarian
tumors. The condition will usually be accompanied by other signs of
excess androgen or erratic hormone activity: Irregular menstrual periods,
the growth of facial hair, and deepening of the voice. Other factors,
if not direct causes, may aggravate and already existing case of acne.
In cases of anxiety and stress,
the body signals the pituitary gland to release more of its hormones
to meet the challenge. These, in turn, stimulate the adrenal cortex
to pour more androgens into the bloodstream. Since people vary in their
tolerance to extra androgens, not everyone under pressure will have
an acne flare-up. But stress will put those who are susceptible at
higher risk. Stress can also lead to nervous scratching and picking
of the face, which can irritate pimples and drive them deeper into the
skin. To complicate matters, it has been found that the output of fatty
acids is also increased during stress. Acne control for skin
is therefore important!
Pregnancy and Skin Care
Hormonal changes in women during pregnancy
and menopause are also contributing factors in
oil secretion and hair growth since hormones produced by the ovaries
have inhibiting effect of the anterior pituitary. If secretion from
the ovaries is affected in any way, there may be lack of control over
the pituitary gland. This can result in a hyperstimulation by pituitary
hormones of the adrenal cortex, which in turn can produce an excess
androgens, which can lead to excessive oil production and hair growth.
Even those with
celebrity skin have to deal with pregnancy!
Sunshine and Skin
The ultraviolet component abetted by
infrared radiation is notorious enemy of good skin. Practically all
the dreary stigmata registered on premature skin are sunshine
induced. Sunlight not only causes skin cancer, but
it accelerates and accentuates all sagging, wrinkling, and yellowing
of the skin associated with aging. The skin discoloration, the redness
in the sunburn represents injury, damage that will accumulate over the
years. Then, skin cancer symptoms may or may not appear.
Genetic factors such as slack, weak
tissues, and or fragile thin skin. Illness, particularly nervous
disorders, sudden weight loss, and malnutrition impacts the
aging process. Besides sun, any exposure to harsh climatic conditions
and temperature extremes should be avoided. Nicotine is not only harmful
in the long run, it runs more than skin deep. It also
causes considerable esthetic damage: skin dehydration lines
and a reduction
of peripheral circulation, ultimately resulting in skin atrophy. Stress,
worry and lack of rest should be considered a major obstacle to well
being, beauty and longevity. Gravity, and facial expression, menopause,
also causes skin
wrinkles.
Using products that are harsh on the
skin such as soap or acne treatments can cause surface dehydration.
Neglect by not drinking enough water and smoking cigarettes. Medication
and illness can cause internal dehydration and ultimately affect
the surface of healthy skin. Inadequate moisturizers
that are too light texture and runny.
This does not provide enough protection
against moisture evaporation from the skin's surface. Scrubs used too
often will break down the cohesion of the top layer of the skin which
is responsible for holding moisture. Astringents made by the skin industry
that have strong alcohol content can act as a drying agent. Dry climate
cause moisture to evaporate quickly. Hot showers which removes sebum
on the skin's surface, it also causes tendency for capillary damage
and dehydration.
Excessive intake of table salt (sodium
chloride) can have a dehydrating effect. Coffee also contribute to dehydration.
There are many skin care tips that
you can use from home. For glowing skin, a facemask of egg white
and honey gently removes the tan from your face. Mix oats with honey,
yogurt and ground almonds. Apply this in your face, leave it for five
minutes and wash with lukewarm water. Hopefully, this will result in
a greatly improved skin condition! Cucumber is a natural cleanser. Mix cucumber
juice with milk and use it instead of a cleanser. Take 1/3-cup cocoa,
three teaspoons of heavy cream, 1/3-cup ripe papaya, 1/4-cup honey and
three teaspoons of oatmeal powder. Mix it all together. Apply on your
face. After 10 minutes, wash your face with warm water.
This is best for oily skin: apply a
mixture of grapes, lemon and egg white. Leave it for 20 minutes and
rinse with warm water. While lemon acts as a natural cleanser, grapes
will soften your skin and egg whites will tighten it. Don’t be alarmed
if your tight skin tingles.
Cut the lemon and rub the wedge all
over your face. Leave it for about 20 minutes, then rinse off with cold
water. This will refresh your face. Avoid doing this if you have dry
skin. Mix honey, lemon and vegetable oil. This mixture is a good moisturizer
for dry skin. Apply this mask for 10 minutes. Apply the mixture of honey
and milk on the face. This will make your healthy skin glow.
Prepare a mask by mixing
a slice of pumpkin with egg yolk and milk. Let this mask set on your
face for 30 minutes for a glowing skin. Mix half-a-cup honey to your
bath water for soft and smooth skin. For a soothing body pack, prepare
a paste of mint leaves and almonds. Mix it with warm water and apply
all over your body. Leave it till it dries and rinse with warm
water. Buttermilk dabbed on skin for 15 minutes will soak up oil from
your skin without drying it. Carrot juice applied daily fades blemishes.
For dark underarms and neck apply lemon juice mixed with cucumber juice
and a pinch of turmeric daily. Leave this on for 20 minutes. This may
or may not help with a skin allergy.
Facial Hair
For removing facial hair.
Apply a sticky
paste of egg white blended with sugar and corn flour. When it dries,
gently peel it off. Repeat this three to four times a week. Thin apple
slices rubbed onto oily skin will help in controlling oily shine. For
supple and sexy skin, apply a ripe smashed banana on
your face for 20 minutes daily. Cauliflower juice applied on warts regularly
will make them fall.
For a fair sensitive skin,
try this natural bleach. Mix orange peels (sun dried and powdered) with milk. Apply this paste
for 25 minutes and wash off. Mix half teaspoon dried curry leaf powder
with multani mitti (fullers earth) and apply on the face. Wash it after
it gets dry. Apply the mixture of tomato juice and honey on the face and neck, wash
it after 15 minutes. Apply the mixture of carrot juice and basin. Leave
it till it dries and wash the face. Add two teaspoon of tomato juice
with 4 teaspoon of curd and apply on the face. Add a pinch of yeast
with 2 teaspoon of cabbage juice and apply. Mix 1 tablespoon of barley
powder with half teaspoon of lime juice and 1 teaspoon of honey. Apply
it on the face and wash after 20 minutes. Mix pineapple juice and carrot
juice together and apply it on the face and wash it after 15 minutes.
Mix vinegar and rose water in equal quantities and apply. Mix curd and
cucumber juice and apply it on the face.
Apply the mixture of coconut water and thick pineapple juice. Make a
paste with 1/2 teaspoon of milk powder, 1/4 teaspoon of egg white and
1/2 teaspoon of lemon juice and apply on the face. For dry skin, make
a paste with egg yolk, olive oil and lemon juice. Apply it on the neck
and face, wash it out after 10 minutes. For oily skin, take a mixture
of oatmeal and egg white and apply it on the neck and face For glowing
skin, use basin or green gram powder mixed with milk instead of soap
made by the skin industry . Apply the mixture of raw turmeric
and cream of milk on the face and wash it after 20 minutes. It will
make your skin fair. Apply the mixture of honey, basin, cream of milk
and olive oil as a face pack. Apply the paste of fenugreek with milk
on the face
and let it dry. Wash off with luke warm water. Make a paste of red sandal
wood and apply it on the face every day for glowing skin. Make a paste
with red sandal powder and coconut milk and apply on the face for soft
skin.
For black spots on skin, use this skin
care treatment: make a paste with mehndi and oil and apply
on the face Make a mixture of 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice and glycerin
and apply it on the spots Apply the paste of turmeric and curry leaves
on the face and wash it after 15 minutes. Apply a mixture of mehndi
and turmeric. For a piece of turmeric, 2-3 leaves of mehndi are used
Grind dried basil leaf , neem and mint (100 gm each). Add some turmeric
powder and rose water to make it in a paste form and apply it on the
spots. Grind betel leaf and add a little coconut oil and apply it on
the spots Soak a chappathi in milk overnight . Make it into a paste
and apply it on black heads. This is proactive skin care!
Repeat for several days. Make a paste of saffron and add some honey,
apply it on the face to remove black spots. To remove black spots...
apply a paste of turmeric and basil. To remove wrinkles on the face,
apply a mixture of sandalwood powder , rosewater and glycerin. Wash with cold water
after some time.
Contrary to what most people think,
having a facial at a beauty salon is not a luxury. Again, it is proactive
skin care. Professional facials help in a deep-cleansing routine
that you cannot possibly do for yourself at home. Facials involve, steaming,
which helps to open out pores and cleansing to remove blackheads
and white heads. This is followed by a
face mask for skin rejuvenation. Then finally a skin dehydration treatment
with a moisturizer. Our skin regenerates cells about every three weeks,
leading to an accumulation of dead cells. Facials help get rid of them.
So a facial once a month would help you maintain healthy and glowing
skin.
Skin firming creams helps protect your
skin from aging & wrinkles. Skin firming creams helps you make feel
remarkably radiant by transforming your complexion. Eye creams reduces
puffiness to reflect the vitality of your eyes. Your skin is constantly
aging and natural skin cream products prevent your skin from aging before
its time. Long lasting youth can be achieved with a number of skin

of a spa treatment.
Sun Screens Skin Care to Prevent Rough Skin, Dry Skin, Wrinkles
Excessive sun-exposure can lead to
loss of moisture from the skin, dark patches and even premature aging.
The skin needs physical protection against harmful rays which is provided
by sunscreens. A few tips on buying and using sunscreen lotions
is a good sunscreen
should provide protection against the sun's UVA and UVB rays. Check
the SPF or Sun Protection Factor on the label. This is denoted
by a number and is related to duration of sun-exposure. If your healthy
skin is more sensitive, choose a sunscreen for your senstive
skin with SPF of 20 and above. Apply
the sunscreen
about 20 minutes
before sun-exposure. This gives the skin time to absorb it. Carry your
sunscreen while holidaying by the sea or in the hills. Reflective
surfaces, like water and snow actually increase the effects of UV radiation.
Reapply sunscreen if you stay in the sun for a long time. It's a good idea to carry one in your handbag.
Rubbing a mix of papaya, cream and sugar into the skin before your bath
is also said to remove skin tan. Juice of ripe tomatoes when applied
over tanned body parts helps in getting rid of the tan! That's really
mysterious skin, then!
Vitamin C to Stop Dry Skin and Rough Skin and Skin Wrinkling
Daily use of vitamin-C can help
reduce wrinkling and other signs of skin aging. There is a particular
kind of vitamin-C called 'L-Ascorbic acid', which is found in oranges
and lemons that is particularly good for skin. Vitamin-C supplements
are also helpful. There are few creams or gels available,
which contain 'L-Ascorbic acid'. When they are applied to the skin,
they may soak up free radicals created by sun exposure or pollution
before they can do any damage to the skin. You don't want sagging skin.
Once the skin starts aging, it will not return to its youthful condition,
but anything that can help slow down the process may be cause enough
for celebration! So engage in serious skin care.
Air pollution can wreak havoc on your
beautiful skin. Body parts that are protected show
less signs of aging than those exposed to the pollutants in the air.
To protect yourself, there are two things that you can do. Wash your
face when you return home with a good face wash
or soap to remove the dirt and other elements from the surface of the
skin. Make sure you use a mild cleanser regularly, if you are outdoors
for very long hours. Shield your face from the pollutants by using
a moisturizer or foundation, which provides a protective layer. (Many
sunscreens offer this additional benefit.)
Moisturizers to Rid You of Rough Skin and Dry Skin
Moisturizers act as a barrier to water
loss through evaporation. Moisturizers will keep your healthy
skin looking younger as smoother skin. No matter what age you
are, no matter what skin type you have, skin moisturizers are very important
to your epidermal well-being. When it comes to your skin you should
always use moisturizers .
The skin is an organ that will respond to liquids and lotions, creams
and gels. Everyone needs moisturizer, even if you have oily skin. Tinted
moisturizers are available if you feel you are too pale. Moisturizers
are available for all skin types. Listen to your skin and if it doesn't
retain enough water, the skin will feel tight and dry and in need of
some moisturizer. Pay attention. Is your skin tight?
Then pamper your face with a herbal and tinted facial moisturizer. With
the seasons constantly changing, besides drinking plenty of water
, be sure to feed your skin moisture.
Facial moisturizers keep the skin healthy
and protect it from dryness in several ways. First they attract moisture
deep into the skin cells, which keeps them juicy and plump. Second,
they seal the moisture in with an occlusive coating and third, they
help fill in the gaps between the skin cells, which keeps the skin's
function holding strong and firm. Moisturizers do not prevent wrinkles
unless they contain sunscreen, which prevent skin discoloration.
Beauty product reviews say the best
way to soften wrinkles is by plumping the skin tissue and swelling it
with water. Herbal moisturizers are easy to use to get beautiful skin,
readily absorbable and should never burn or irritate. Elta moisturizer
for the face conditions, protects and does not feel too greasy on the
skin. Overuse of moisturizer is as bad as not using any. Too much moisturizer
can lead to clogged pores and blackheads.
Moisturizers come in various types,
balms and creams are the thickest and greasiest; oils and lotions are
lighter and more fluid; gels are clear or translucent and the lightest
of all. A general rule of thumb is the thicker the texture, the more
oil; the thinner the texture, the more water (unless the product itself
is an oil.) The best time to apply moisturizer is right after you
wash or shower ,
when the skin is damp and the moisturizer can seal in the moisture.
Do not over moisturize as it can lead
to clogged pores. Your forehead and cheeks tend to be the drier areas.
There is no need to moisturize your chin if it is not needed. Most women
misdiagnose their skin type. This can cause improper moisturizing. You
also need to change your techniques of moisturizing with the changes
of seasons. When using a moisturizer, always apply it to the skin in
a circulatory motion .
Pat your beautiful skin with the tips of your fingers gently as if playing
a tune on a piano. This is also a great stimulant for your healthy skin.
Tired of buying moisturizers too often? Here is how to make them last
longer. Use a small amount of natural vegetable oil as a base first.
This will help make your moisturizer last much longer. Use a moisturizer
as a base before applying your foundation.
For best results, wait until the moisturizer
is dry and then apply foundation. However, if your foundation is somewhat
dry, then apply it right away, your moisturizer will help it to loosen
up a bit. To get the best results from any of your facial products,
rub it between your hands, this helps to heat it up, and hence, becomes
easier to apply.
Using Toners to Help with Dry Skin or Rough Skin
Natural skin toners are often
called balancers, clarifying lotions, skin purifiers, or astrigents.
Using a hydrated facial toner will help to remove the makeup from your
face and make your pores look smaller by swelling the tissue around
the pore. Natural skin toners are benificial in keeping your skin from having
different shades of uneven color. If you have very oily skin you will
benefit from using natural skin toners, especially in the summer. Hydrated
facial toners leave your skin feeling cool and refreshed.
Natural skin toners will normalize
your skin and leave it with a tingly tight feeling. Skin tight?
Take a close look at your skins profile to see if your skin
is oily or dry. To have clean, clear skin use an alcohol-free toner
with bacteria fighters.
Natural skin toners help cut
through the oils and wipes the dirt from your face. Natural beauty can
be found in organic products which are available on line. Natural skin
toners will create the shrunken-pores effect and leave your skin feeling
very clean, right down to the pores. If you wash your face quite a few
times a day a hydrated facial toner might be the right solution for
you.
Night Creams to Overcome Dry Skin and Rough Skin Problems
Night creams are the answer to waking
up with your skin looking refreshed. It is not necessary for night
creams to be thicker than your daily
moisturizer although it is benifical to have a night cream that is able
to restore your skins elactisity and skin renewal. You don't need to
have a medicine cabinet full of creams, sample several and simply pick
the best.
A good night cream should contain collagen,
elastin and essential lipids to help refresh your face while you sleep.
Night creams are essential to keeping your skin moisturized. To maximize
your night creams, gently apply a dime-size dab to your skin
and use an upward, circular motion to lightly massage the night cream
into your face. Do not put night cream on your upper lids before bedtime
or you will wake up with puffy lids.
Night creams basically restore essential
collagen, lipids and elastin which is a nourishing moisturizer for your
face. Night cream is like a much needed vitamin for tired, stressed
skin. Be sure to take good care of your skin, day or night and keep
a well supplied stock of nightcreams for home or travel.
Women of Color and African American Women Resolve Dry Skin and Rough
Skin Issues
Women of color now have more options to look
beautiful, as companies realize the potential to offer quality products
and good service to ethnic market with products especially tailored
to her needs, because women of color want to feel welcome at the cosmetics
counter, instead of ignored by companies, as happened until today.
African American women usually have sensitive, oily skin
that scars easily, so products powdery based can look chalky and ashy
on darker complexions, while pink pigmented products are unflattering
to ethnic skin tones. Skincare basics include a good understanding of
the role of Melanin in your skin.
Today, more companies are producing
cosmetics for ethnic skin and hair, including natural and mineral lines
that cause less harm to your very special beauty, including bleaching
creams (avoid skin discoloration!), oil reduction products and sunscreens,
disregard of color, African American women should all wear sun protection. Your skin needs
special attention to unify skin tone when it comes to applying makeup,
downplaying overly prominent features and focusing on the upper third
of the face. Learn to get the best from your face by knowing its structure
of your facial features and the evenness of your natural skin color
to create a great look.
Pigmentation
Never apply oil based products trying
to make your makeup last longer, because dark skin has a tendency to
reject all makeup. Melanin pigment protectors start getting tired with
age, shown on the skin as irregular pigmentation , dark patches, age spots
and lines. This is skin discoloration. Hide uneven
skin tone by using concealer and powder that is transparent or slightly
colored to avoid the shinny look. A foundation tone that is between
the lightest and darkest coloring of your skin, is the most convenient
for you.
African hair is the curliest hair,
and many women of color suffer hair damage from chemical treatments
and heat styling, and also having problems finding foundation and makeup
colors that are at the same time flattering. Black hair is also the
driest and the most fragile, so ethnic woman must skip grease and wash
their hair every three weeks using a gentle shampoo, especially formulated
to impart moisture while removing hair-dulling product buildup.
Women of color are tired of have been
told for decades that grease is essential for their hair Or in other
words, you can have healthy hair, beautiful and easy to style whether
you wear it straight, curly, wavy or in a natural Afro, however the
curlier the hair, the drier it tends to be. Moisturizing your dry hair,
will make it easy to repair damaged hair helping your hair to grow long.
Avoid over blow drying your hair because
the hot air causes fried ends and severe damage through prolonged use.
Do not use blow dryers , curling irons or hot-combs that
dry your hair. Try brushing your hair out instead for a natural style.
Moisturize your hair using a product that penetrates the cuticle to
create shine, for example a pure essence oil, such as lavender oil,
almond oil, or even dropping on it vitamin E messaging gentle. Keep
your hair healthy by trimming the ends every four months.
For Women of color may be harder to
detect split ends, particularly on textured hair than on straight strands,
but easily to get them away if you keep your hair longer, or make the
regular trimming a routine. Never scratch your scalp because you can
cut the skin, making favorable for an assortment of bacteria. In such
a case, relieve the itch by swiping the scalp with an astringent-soaked
pad or cotton ball, cleansing the scalp of oily buildup while re-energizing
your skin.
Having curly hair does
not mean that you should wear in just a very few different styles. If
you want to look different and yet original try the Senegalese twists,
an easy to do hair style, cute and fresh, suitable the entire year round,
just part your hair horizontally from earlobe to earlobe to get center
part.
Now, working back from your forehead,
start twisting narrow sections of your hair flat against your scalp,
and picking up more strands each time as you move back like when corn
rowing, and end pinning each twist at the horizontal part, leaving the
back totally wild and loose.
Hands have very few oil glands, causing
them to wither and peel. Don’t over wash your hands
, specially with harsh soap, which can make them
look and feel like leather. Use only hand washes. Hand creams keep your
hands looking younger and vibrant. If you work with water protect your
hands with gloves. In the nights use hand creams containing lactic acid
and urea. Go up to your arms. Cover with plastic gloves and keep on
for 10 to 15 minutes, before removing plastic. Let the creams stay on
overnight on the hands. It's a pretty good skin treatment.
Nails and Dry Skin and Rough Skin
Soften nails with
a nourishing cream, too, because they tend to get brittle. Pay special
attention to the cuticles. Soak your fingers in tolerably hot olive
oil for 10 to 15 minutes. Use remover infrequently, but a good nail
polish is protective.
Hang nails are tears in the cuticle or in
the skin along the side of a fingernail. Don’t attack them with bites
or tugs. Remove any offender that rears its nasty head with a clean
sharp cuticle scissors and apply a dab of antibiotic ointment to prevent
infections. Hand creams help you get rid of dryness and brown spots.
Pregnancy and Dry Skin or Rough Skin – What Can be Done?
Here are a few tips to making sure
that your skin and health are in top condition during those nine months
of pregnancy. Check your existing beauty products for their suitability.
Some beauty products may be unsuitable or unsafe for pregnant
skin
treatment. Always check your existing beauty products to make
sure that they are compatible. If you find they’re not, or are concerned,
you can switch to products especially suited for the pregnancy
period.
Long baths are not advisable since
the prolonged contact that your skin has with water can dehydrate it
and leave it looking dull. Since skin pigmentation can change during
pregnancy, it can be more susceptible to tanning and/or burning. Choose
products with UV filters, and pay special attention to your face and
hands since they are the most exposed. During pregnancy , the turnover of skin cells is accelerated.
This is why you have to nourish and moisturize even more during pregnancy
than you would normally. Maintaining pH levels is very important to
avoid skin irritation and skin infection. Therefore, always choose shower
or bath products that are pH balanced, and you’ll be happy about the
healthy glow your skin has.
Don’t underestimate the power of a
good foot gel. Perhaps one with menthol, can really pep you up at the
end of a long day. Your feet are under a lot of stress during pregnancy
, and can get swollen
and tired, so it will really help. Eat foods that are rich in vitamins.
You can also ask you doctor for supplements. Pregnancy can be a stressful
time, so it is advised that you just try to take it easy and relax.
Apply rose water on your face and cover it with slices of cucumber.
Listen to soft music and lay down in a darkened room. Your tensions
and worries will slip away. Sleep is very important. Try to get at least nine
to ten hours of sleep in a day. Minor damage that is done to your skin
during the day, due to fatigue, stress, pollution etc is repaired during
sleep, so it is absolutely essential for beautiful skin..
Your Eyes and Dry Skin Removal
Blink your eyes for a while after washing
them in cold water. Repeat this three to four times a day, and you’ll
have a sparkle in your eye . You can treat the dark circles
under your eye by dabbing them with a cotton pad dipped in lukewarm
tea water. If your eyes have a burning sensation, then you can put a
drop of pure rose water in each eye to relieve it.
Eye creams are very expensive, but really worthy and necessary
to tend skin. The eye is surrounded by the thinnest
tissue on the face. The skin under eye has no fatty layer and not much
support, that is why it wrinkles very easily. You may directly apply
high-quality essential oils like jojoba, kalaya or rosa
mosqueta to your under eye area. Because oils spread smoothly and absorb
easily, you wont have to disturb that delicate skin area by touching
it too much. And when you wake up, your under eye area will be more
smoother than it did the night before.
Probably, a good laugh is
the best way to relax a tense face, but these facial exercises also
help to tone the face muscles quickly. Scrunch up your whole face for
a few seconds so that your nose is wrinkled, your forehead furrowed,
and your eyes and mouth are tightly closed. Do the opposite. Open your
mouth and eyes
as
wide as you can. Close your mouth again, purse your lips, and push your
mouth up to the left, then push to the right. Grin - as if from ear
to ear and open your eyes wide again. Hold and repeat the grin, but
this time, tuck in your chin to tighten your neck muscles.
We all love to possess a radiant glowing
skin, thick lustrous hair, healthy nails & bright sparkling eyes.
The food that we eat is of utmost importance to achieve this goal. Less
water causes blotchy, dull skin & acne. Consume 7-8 glasses of water
daily. Replace
refined flour with whole grains as during the refining process, the
Vitamin B, proteins and fibers are removed. A balanced diet of proteins,
carbohydrate and fats with the required amount of minerals and vitamins
is essential for good, healthy skin.
Foods that Fight Rough Skin and Dry Skin
The proteins are needed for repair
of body tissues. The skin and hair need enough protein and the deficiency
causes dull and dry skin and scalp. Vegetarians specially
need to plan their diets carefully to include protein rich foods such
as soya beans, sprouts, cheese, milk, grains, peas & beans. Freshly
made cheese from toned milk is an excellent source of protein for the
vegetarians. Sprouted beans are enormously rich in nutrition as both
the Vitamin B and C content increases as much as 40% during sprouting.
If porridge sounds to drab, make it
interesting by adding the fruit of your choice to it. Include yogurt
in your meals. This dairy product contains bacteria which keeps intestines
clean, giving a healthy glow to your beautiful skin.
Sugar is one of those carbohydrate
rich foods which has no value. On the contrary, it can cause acne, poor
circulation and obesity. So instead of sugar, add brown sugar or honey
to your diet. Both help purify blood and cleanse the body of toxins.
Other refined carbohydrates like cause the problem are white flour and
white bread in
which the nutrients such as vitamins and fibers get removed during refining.
These thus largely provide empty calories. Excess carbohydrate which
is not needed to supply immediate energy demands, is stored as fat.
So, avoid white bread etc, instead opt for brown bread and whole wheat
flour chapattis. You need very little fat, but a little is necessary
for good circulation and supple & soft skin.
Men have approximately 15% oilier skin
and significantly larger pores than women do. Basically, this means
you get dirtier. It is very important; no matter what skin type you
have, to clean your face every day. Deep cleansing is important. It
keeps pores clear, skin healthy and you looking good. Cleansing products
should be as chemical-free as possible. Deodorant soaps shouldn't be
used on your face. They cleanse with harsh ingredients and leave a detergent
film behind. This may irritate your skin and will clog your pores. Go
natural .
A good scrub is essential for healthy clean skin. It will remove dead
cells and smooth the surface of your face. The scrub should be strong
without being damaging. Stay away from scrubs that contain rough elements
like ground bits of nut or seed extracts. They will tear and damage
the healthy skin. A good scrub will invigorate you, not hurt you.
Moisturizing is a necessity. Again,
the product with the least amount of chemical additives is the best.
Always use a light moisturizer on your face after cleansing and shaving
and don't forget your neck ! For an intensive moisture treatment
use pure vitamin E, or aloe vera oil. It is available in liquid form,
or just break open a capsule and apply the oil directly to the skin.
This is a great under eye treatment. Remember it is very important to
moisturize this sensitive area of the face. It is one of the first places
to show age because the under eye skin secretes no necessary oils on
its own. Because men are outside more than women are, environmental
debris and pollutants are more a factor to their skin's health. Toning
helps keep the skin clear and firm.
As skin ages, it needs to work harder
to maintain its elasticity. Astringents and toners with glycolic or
alpha hydroxyl acids work the best for toning the face. These acids
actually can reduce the pore size, and help avoid ingrown hairs. They
are aggressive and have quick results. Remember to look for a product
that is not photosensitive (sensitive to light). Depending on your skin
type (oily, dry or combination) and the time of year, there are different
products that treat and enhance your skin. Different treatments will
have very different results. It is important to know your healthy skin's
needs.
Exfoliation and Dry Skin or Rough Skin – How It Helps
All types of skin need to be exfoliated
. This is the removal of dead skin
cells that form daily. This is an essential part of skin treatment.
After shaving, you need to moisturize with a product that has absolutely
no alcohol in it. Avoid heavy fragrant after-shave products too, as
they can irritate the skin. Skin that is too shiny doesn't look healthy,
just greasy. Blot the excess oils away. Blotting papers or a light powder
that will give you a more natural finish, are both good options to try.
Don't forget about your lips .
Find a balm that has an SPF of at least 15 in it. Peppermint oil has a nice feel
and keeps the lips looking luscious. Healthy skin is young looking skin.
There are preventative techniques that can promote the best skin possible
and keep it looking its best longer. Remember that your skin is a mirror
of your overall body health.
Sun damage leads to hyper pigmentation
(brown spots) which can develop into serious skin disease. Excessive
exposure can also exaggerate and thicken fine lines. Use an SPF 15 or
higher on all exposed skin, especially on your face. Exercise
promotes capillary
functioning which can decrease premature aging. It also increases oxygen
to the tissues which keeps skin looking young. Keep vitamins such as
C and E in your diet regimen. Too much of anything is never a good idea.
Stay away from excessive alcohol, smoking, fatigue and stress. Not only
can these factors lead to premature aging; they also decrease facial
circulation making you look older.
The thickened skin texture associated
with middle age is caused by cellular build up. It responds very well
to mild, abrasive daily cleansing with beauty grains such as finely
ground corn meal, ground sun flowers or almonds. Massage gently to cleanse
and stimulate. To make or keep your skin beautiful, it's best to work
from the inside. Eating the right kind of food can do you more good
than any medicine, and go a long way in helping your body's own healing
forces. Eat a balanced diet that includes raw foods, plenty of yellow
and orange vegetables (they
contain beta carotene - a precursor to vitamin A). Foods high in sulfur
such as garlic, onions, asparagus and eggs. Include fruits, seeds, grains
and nuts.
Here is a cleansing stimulating facial
treatment that is very helpful for those with oily skin. Mash together
the pulp of one garden ripe tomato and enough fuller's
earth (should find it at most pharmacies) to make a smooth paste. Rub
it into your skin and leave it on until it dries completely (note: do
not apply to eye area). Rinse with warm water, then splash your face
with cold water. Blot dry.
If you have large pores that resemble
little holes on your beautiful skin, the following steps may be helpful.
Stop using commercial products on your skin. Instead, use homemade skin
cleansers. Splash warm water onto your face and pour half a handful
of stone-ground cornmeal into your wet palm. Massage the moistened
meal into your entire face area, adding water as needed. Another homemade
cleanser can be made by adding a few drops of lemon or lime juice or
apple cider vinegar to milk (use powdered skin milk if your skin is
oily).
Whether it's diaper rash, chicken pox,
measles, insect bites or hives, corn starch can provide
relief. For measles and chicken pox, bathe in a tub of water to which
a large handful of cornstarch has been added. For the other rashes rub
the cornstarch on as a powder.
The air inside your house can get very
dry in the winter. This will play a major part in aggravating your dry
skin condition. To add humidity the dry air in your house, put a little
extra water in the kettle when you're boiling water. Leave the kettle
on the burner as it cools. It will continue to steam for 10 to 15 minutes,
making your life a whole lot more comfortable.
Not enough zinc, caused by a diet high
in refined carbohydrates may be the chief cause of acne. Zinc is necessary
for processing carbohydrates, but it is removed when cane is refined
into white sugar, and wheat is refined into white flour. Eat more foods
rich in zinc, including soybeans , whole grains, sunflower seeds,
and a small amount of raw nuts daily. Zinc also has antibacterial activity,
and is a necessary element in the oil-producing glands of the skin.
Melasma has been considered to arise
from pregnancy, oral contraceptives , endocrine
dysfunction, genetic factors, medications, nutritional deficiency, hepatic
dysfunction, and other factors. The majority of cases appear related
to pregnancy or oral contraceptives. The infrequency of melasma in postmenopausal
women on estrogen replacement suggests that estrogen alone is not the
cause. In more recent experience, combination treatment using estrogen
plus progestational agents is being used in postmenopausal women, and
melasma is being observed in some of these older women who did not have
melasma during their pregnancies. Sun exposure would appear to be a
stimulating factor in predisposed individuals. Although a few cases
within families have been describe, melasma should not be considered
a heritable disorder.
With age, extra weight can accumulate
in areas under the chin , the neck or cheeks, giving the
skin an older look. Other areas of skin such as the abdomen,
thighs
, buttocks and calves look older if
they are carrying excess fat. A combination of balanced nutrition and
exercise can greatly improve the appearance of the skin. Drinking enough
water is also important. Improved muscle tone and improved circulation
also help to keep that younger looking skin we would all like to maintain.
Some excess fat can be removed by liposuction; however, it is much better
not to accumulate that excess weight in the first place.
Your face tends to conform to the position
or expression that you carry most of the time. If you often frown
or
scowl you skin is more likely to develop lines or wrinkles between the
eyes, down turning lines at the corners of the mouth, or other lines
or furrows that conform to the frowning facial expression. A smiling,
pleasant, relaxed expression is goof for your face and will help keep
you looking younger.
Sleeping on your face can cause sleep
wrinkles . Sleeping in the same position
most of the night for years can permanently crease your skin. With a
small pillow under the lumbar (lower) spine, it is possible to sleep
on your back comfortably without causing wrinkles on your face.
Consistent skin care is important in
maintaining younger looking skin. In recent years, several products
appear to cause an improvement in aged skin. Although Retin-A? has received
a lot of publicity and does seem to improve the appearance of skin over
a period of time, it can cause skin irritation, sun sensitivity, peeling,
and requires a medical prescription. Alpha hydroxyl acids also appear
to achieve remarkable results in giving the skin a younger look and
lacks most of the irritating side effects seen with prescription products.
What Are Some Common Skin Problems Besides Dry Skin and Rough Skin?
As young children, most people have
few, if any moles . Most moles appear as we grow older.
We may look older than we are if we have numerous or unsightly moles,
especially on the face. Moles can be easily removed by a skilled dermatologist
or plastic surgeon. This can greatly improve the appearance of the skin
and give it a younger, smoother look.

As we age, extra blood vessels appear
on the skin. Three types of blood vessels are most common. Telangectasias
are
blood vessel lines and blotches that occur on the face, neck, and upper
chest. These are caused from sun damage, flushing or blushing, some
skin diseases such as adult acne (acne rosacea) and excessive use of
cortisone-type skin creams. Other activities which greatly increase
the blood flow to the face such as vigorous exercise, hot spicy foods
and drinks, alcohol, hot tubs, etc. may aggravate this problem. It may
be possible to prevent telangectasias due to flushing by using a cold
damp towel on the face during vigorous exercise, during use of hot
tubs or at other times when
there is marked facial flushing. Sun protection with sunscreen products
and a hat can also help to prevent this problem. Telangectasias are
best removed with Krypton, KTP, copper vapor, continuous wave dye, or
flash lamp pulsed dye lasers.
Cherry angiomas are small bright
red, mole-like spots on the skin. These spots are easily removed with
laser, electrocautery, or surgery. Getting rid of these lesions will
remove one of the tell-tale signs of aging.
Spider and varicose veins
appear on the legs with age. These are most often caused by heredity,
hormones, and pregnancies. Sclerotherapy (injections) and new simple
surgical techniques can easily remove most of these vessels giving the
legs a younger look.
Brown blotches occur on the skin with
age. These include freckles, liver spots (lentigines) , and
uneven pigmentation (melasma) which usually occurs in women because
of a combination of sun exposure and estrogen type hormones either naturally
or in birth control pills. The Phaze 13 Pigment Gel, or NuCelle? Mandelic
Serum 10-15%, and prescription medications can both help. Laser treatment,
dermabrasion (skin sanding), chemical peels, and liquid nitrogen freezing
can also improve these pigmented blotches. These procedures are performed
by dermatologists and plastic surgeons.
Waxy scaling yellow, brown bumps
(seborrheic keratoses) and
fleshy tags (skin tags) occur with age and
make the skin look older. Enlarged oil glands and small cysts commonly
appear on the face with age. These small skin lesions are easily removed
by a dermatologist using simple office surgical procedures, liquid nitrogen
freezing or lasers. A clear complexion without all of these little distractions,
gives a much younger look to the skin.
Wrinkles and lines that appear gradually
are caused by sun damage, gravity, and repeated folding of the skin,
as well as by many other genetic and environmental factors. Protection
from the sun can greatly reduce the wrinkling process. Use of NuCelle?
Skin Care products with alpha hydroxyl acids can improve the appearance
of fine lines and wrinkles within a matter of weeks.
Chemical peels can be performed by dermatologists and plastic
surgeons to alleviate skin problems and bring about
healthy skin . These peels are usually divided into
light, medium, and deep peels. Light peel can help fine lines and wrinkles
and improve the texture and smoothness of the skin. These can usually
be done without missing work. Medium peels can remove fine and some
medium depth wrinkles and lines. Usually a 7 to 10 day recovery period
is necessary after a medium peel. Scarring, although rare, can occur
from medium depth peels. Deep peels
are quite effective in deeper wrinkles such as those that appear over
the upper lip called lipstick lines. These peel have a higher risk of
scarring and usually require two weeks for recovery. (NuCelle? can also
be used before and after chemical peels.) Laser resurfacing is also
very effective at removing wrinkles, and if used by skilled hands, have
a lower risk of scarring, and can achieve more even results.
For the prettiest, most presentable
makeup look, skip the trends and follow these tips. You're guaranteed
to look polished and perfect! An off-color base will make every other
cosmetic you apply look not quite right. Splurge on foundation at the
department store, where you can ask for help in finding the right shade.
Most women's eyelids are
translucent, thereby looking darker or more blue than the rest of the
face. This discoloration can change the color of the eye products you
wear. Before you apply shadow or liner, prime lids with a special base
for lids, or with a light swipe of foundation followed by powder. Not
only will this even the tone of your eyelids, it will also make your
shadows go on more smoothly and last longer.
Sweeping on cheek color
in stripes in an effort to create cheekbones only succeeds in making
you look dated and like you're trying too hard. For a more classic,
attractive look, apply blush to the apples of your cheeks in a circular
motion, and avoid swiping the blush out toward your hairline.
Loose powder is easier to control and
more versatile than its pressed cousin. What's more, it sets every type
of cosmetic, from foundation to eye shadow to even lipstick. Pick a
loose powder with a yellow undertone to ensure it works with your skin
tone, and apply with a fluffy powder brush.
Even if you wear no other makeup, keeping
your brows groomed perfectly gives you an instantly
polished appearance. So pluck whenever you see a stray hair come in
(they appear sneakily). That could mean every day, depending on how
quickly your eyebrow hairs grow.
Your makeup application is only as
good as the brushes you use, because high-quality brushes allow you
to apply and blend better than anything else. At minimum, you need a
fluffy powder brush ,
a flat eye shadow brush , a tapered blush brush , and an eyeliner
brush .
Lip liner can enhance a polished makeup
look, but it must be imperceptible when you're wearing it. That means
you should go for a liner shade that matches your lipstick exactly,
or one that is so neutral, it blends into any color you wear. What not
to do: Wear a lip liner that's several shades darker than
your lipstick. That look is over! The most wearable and polished formula
for lipstick is a cream: It's long-wearing and gives full color, but
has a soft shine and moisturizing properties, too. Avoid heavy matte
lipstick and too-shiny glosses.
The most versatile eye shadow
?
A neutral color with a hint of shimmer if you like that makes your eyes
pop. Darker shadows tend to age the eyes and look costumey, not elegant.
Some shades that fit: bone, taupe, light heather, and caramel. Your
whole look will appear more subtle and polished if the makeup shades
you wear all fall within the same color family. So if you love a cool
white shadow, choose a blush and lipstick with a cool, pink undertone.
Similarly, if your favorite blush is a warm peach, go for shadow and
lipstick with a warm undertone, too.
There are too many acne fighting products
on the market to count, and the majority of them simply do not work.
However, there are some that do work quite well. The problem is that
many people who suffer from acne will spend quite a bit of time and
money trying to find the best acne treatments. Teenagers often outgrow
acne before they find a treatment that works.
One of the better acne treatments on
the market today is Proactive . Proactive seems to be helping many
people who could not find other solutions that worked. It has been featured
on infomercials, news stories, magazine articles, and newspaper articles.
Proactive is a system that includes a renewing cleanser, revitalizing
toner, and repairing lotion. Prescription grade benzoyl peroxide is
the active ingredient in Proactive. Proactive does not require a prescription.
A treatment that is available by prescription
is Accutane . Accutane is a very strong medication,
that is only suitable for those who suffer from severe and persistent
acne. The medication is taken internally, and there are possible side
effects, including birth defects, dry and cracked lips, and liver dysfunction.
Another one of that is used topically
is retin-a . Many people have had great success
with retin-a, which is used to treat acne, acne scars, wrinkles, stretch
marks, skin discoloration, and a variety of other skin afflictions.
Retin-a is available by prescription, but some over the counter medications
contain retin-a.
Not all treatments come in the form
of chemicals. Certain essential oils are also beneficial in the treatment
of acne. These essential oils can be applied topically for the treatment
of mild to moderate acne. The best essential oils for acne treatment
are: Tea Tree Oil , Bergamot Oil, Clove Oil , Lavender
Oil
,
and Rosewood Oil
.
If the essential oil needs to be diluted, mix it with Grapeseed
Oil for best
results. In order to find the best acne treatment for you, start with
essential oils. If that doesn't work, go to the next step by trying
Proactive. If Proactive doesn't work, then try a prescription alternative.
You may also consider being tested for food allergies, as certain allergies
can cause acne. In this case, the only treatment you need is to eliminate
those certain foods from your diet.
Acne is the term for plugged pores
(blackheads and whiteheads), pimples, and even deeper lumps (cysts or
nodules) that occur on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders and even
the upper arms. Acne affects most teenagers to some
extent. However, the disease is not restricted to any age group; adults
in their 20s - even into their 40s - can get acne. While not a life
threatening condition, acne can be upsetting and disfiguring. When severe,
acne can lead to serious and permanent scarring. Even less severe cases
can lead to scarring .
When you read about acne or other skin
diseases, you encounter words or phrases that may be confusing. For
example, the words used to describe the lesions of acne comedo, papule,
pustule, nodule and cyst are understandable only if you know each word’s
definition. It also is helpful to have a photo that is characteristic
for each type of lesion. Here is a brief summary of definitions of words
used to describe acne, with accompanying photos. Let’s begin, though,
with the definition of lesion, an
all-purpose word.
Lesion , a physical change in body tissue
caused by disease or injury. A lesion may be external (e.g., acne, skin
cancer, psoriatic plaque, knife cut), or internal (e.g., lung cancer,
atherosclerosis in a blood vessel, cirrhosis of the liver). Thus, when
you read about acne lesions you understand what is meant a physical
change in the skin caused by a disease process in the sebaceous follicle.
Acne lesions range in severity from comedones (blackheads and whiteheads)
to nodules and cysts. Here is a brief definition of acne lesions.
A comedo is a sebaceous
follicle plugged with sebum, dead cells from inside the sebaceous follicle,
tiny hairs, and sometimes bacteria. When a comedo is open, it is commonly
called a blackhead because the surface of the plug in the follicle has
a blackish appearance. A closed comedo is commonly called a whitehead;
its appearance is that of a skin-colored or slightly inflamed "bump"
in the skin.
The whitehead differs in color from
the blackhead because the opening of the plugged sebaceous follicle
to the skin’s surface is closed or very narrow, in contrast to the distended
follicular opening of the blackhead. Neither blackheads nor whiteheads
should be squeezed or picked open, unless extracted
by a dermatologist under sterile conditions. Tissue injured by squeezing
or picking can become infected by staphylococci, streptococci and other
skin bacteria. The following photos are characteristic of acne with
comedones.
A papule is defined
as a small (5 millimeters or less), solid lesion slightly elevated above
the surface of the skin. A group of very small papules and microcomedones
may be almost invisible but have a "sandpaper" feel to the
touch. A papule is caused by localized cellular reaction to the process
of acne. This photo shows papules and comedones on the face of an acne
patient.
1,964
Pustule is a dome-shaped, fragile lesion
containing pus that typically consists of a mixture of white blood cells,
dead skin cells, and bacteria. A pustule that forms over a sebaceous
follicle usually has a hair in the center. Acne pustules that heal without
progressing to cystic form usually leave no scars.
A macule is the temporary
red spot left by a healed acne lesion. It is flat, usually red or red-pink,
with a well defined border. A macule may persist for days to weeks before
disappearing. When a number of macules are present at one time they
can contribute to the "inflamed face" appearance of acne.
This photo shows the "red face" appearance of acne with macules.
Like a papule, a nodule is
a solid, dome-shaped or irregularly-shaped lesion. Unlike a papule,
a nodule is characterized by inflammation, extends into deeper layers
of the skin and may cause tissue destruction that results in scarring.
A nodule may be very painful. Nodular acne is a severe form of acne
that may not respond to therapies other than isotretinoil.
A cyst is a sac-like
lesion containing liquid or semi-liquid material consisting of white
blood cells, dead cells, and bacteria. It is larger than a pustule,
may be severely inflamed, extends into deeper layers of the skin, may
be very painful, and can result in scarring. Cysts and nodules often
occur together in a severe form of acne called nodulocystic.

Systemic therapy with isotretinoin
is sometimes the only effective treatment for nodulocystic acne. Some
acne investigators believe that true cysts rarely occur in acne, and
that the lesions called cysts are usually severely inflamed nodules,
and the term nodulocystic should be abandoned. Regardless of terminology,
this is a severe form of acne that is often resistant to treatment and
likely to leave scars after healing.
In most cases, acne starts between
the ages of ten and thirteen and usually lasts for five to ten years.
It normally goes away on its own sometime in the early twenties. However,
acne can persist into the late twenties or thirties or even beyond.
Some people get acne for the first time as adults.
Acne affects young men and young women
about equally, but there are differences. Young men are more likely
than young women to have more severe, longer lasting forms of acne.
Despite this fact, young men are less likely than young women to visit
a dermatologist for their acne. In contrast, young women are more likely
to have intermittent acne due to hormonal changes associated with their
menstrual cycle and acne caused by cosmetics. These kinds of acne may
afflict young women well into adulthood.
The best thing you can do is to take
care of yourself. Then you won't need any treatments, remedies or cures
for rough or dry skin. You will be glad you did!
